23 Olympic Sports That Skateboarders Would Dominate

Published 12/3/2013 by Sean Bowes

As often as a pair of balls get sacked on a rail, the topic of Olympic skateboarding rears its ugly, gold-medal-brandished head. As if to drive the final nail in the coffin of winning the battle of "is it or isn't it?" an official sport. But really, who cares? It will probably never happen. In fact, professional skateboarders probably have a better chance of hanging up their boards and start taking archery lessons if they want a gold medal that doesn't have a Yoohoo logo on it. Or, dust off the ol' boxing gloves.

Recently, a photo that surfaced online got us at The Boardr talking. The photo, snapped by New York photographer Howard Schatz, compared a few dozen scantily clad Olympians to show their different body types along with the sports they play.We thought it would be fitting to see which event pro skateboarders might compete in. Here's what we came up with:

Ping Pong

Brian Hansen aka Slash
Chad Tim Tim (see Transworld's "A Time To Shine")

Hurdles

Luis Tolentino
Aldrin Garcia
Larry Perkins (snaps a 'clean' 50'' ollie)

Curling

Dylan Rieder
Mark Appleyard (you know, cuz he's Canadian...)
The Decenzos, Scott and Ryan

High Dive

Ali Boulala (Really Sorry)
Sammy Baca
Mark Appleyard (gold-medal-worthy laybacks)

Hammer Throw

Jake Duncombe

Shot-put

Jon Dickson

200M Breast Stroke

Austyn Gillette

Javelin

Tony Hawk

Women's Volleyball Spectator

Fred Gall

Instagram is killing off the significance of skateboard magazines. It became apparent a few days ago while I was taking a poop. There I was in my bathroom—which should look like your bathroom with a pile of skate mags next to the toilet—scrolling away on Instagram.

This was a hard article for me to write. There are so many great nicknames in skateboarding. From Pig Pen, who was the Andy Roy of Burnside, to Tbone, Tyrone Olson’s alter ego, to more up to date names like Nugget a.k.a. Shane O’Niell. Then there's countless cats with the same one like Science Fair, Dog Boy, Cancer this or Mighty that or Blank the Greek or Ship Stop this, etc. I could go on for hours about pros who have nicknames. Some don't want me to share, which I did anyway, but others wear them like a badge of honor. With no more filler I bring you the Top 10 Nicknames in Skateboarding.
