Nike SB's App is Finally Out

Posted by Rob Meronek on Monday, October 28, 2013

I've been wanting a digital way to play a game of SKATE forever. I used to play with friends by uploading to Facebook years ago. Today, Nike SB's app was released that has exactly what I was looking for. I just downloaded it and got super excited to give it a try where I went straight to the front yard here in downtown Tampa to film a trick. I started a game and took some screen shots below. I think they got it right. Download the Nike SB app here. Thanks for the entertainment, Swoosh!

Step one is setting up a profile of course. You can use your Nike Plus account if you have one from using a Fuel Band.

There's a full trick list in there where you can film your own and add to the list. All I care about is the Game of SKATE thing right now.

They tweeted about the app being out about an hour ago and there's already 434 games played. Update: I looked at noon the next day and only 617 games had been played so far. Seems a little low?

So when you go and start a game, you first choose your trick. It appears you have to choose from the list of preset tricks. I tried to enter Backside 360 No Comply, my go to move as an old guy, and it wouldn't let me proceed. So, I picked the lowly kickflip to go in with.

Once you pick your trick, you get a warning that you can't go back after you start filming. Once you start filming, you get 10 seconds of film to attempt your trick. Afterwards, it asks you if you made it or not. I blew it and didn't make my trick and got this screen. Nice.

So, I started another game and landed my kickflip. It saves and uploads your video and now you're basically just waiting for someone else out there to challenge you. I didn't see right away if you could pick or search for someone specific to play a game with. More on that later. Right now, I'm just like an excited kid playing with this app getting a game going with anyone out there.

Tight! I got a notification that someone accepted my challenge. Nice to e-meet you, Brandon M.

The status screen tells you what's going on with the game you're in.

Now I'm just browsing around while I wait for Brandon M to film his trick. There's a full list of badges you can earn in there.

There's also a ton of tricks in there where you can upload your own footage of that trick. The skate nerd in me is so jealous of the mountain of data they're going to pile up. Damn!

Oh man, Brandon M missed his kickflip and got a letter. I'll continue this game in the morning, Brandon M. What a fun first version app they made at Nike SB. Download the Nike SB app here and I'll hand you a digital letter on the next game.
