Who's Winning the Instagram World Championships of Skateboarding?
Published 7/22/2016 by Rob Meronek
Some people pretend to be too cool for contests, but just about everyone skates the biggest contest ever: Instagram. How many likes? Views? Followers? It's the new rat race and skateboarding sure isn't immune. Kind of sad in a way, but whatever. I'm here to report the numbers on it just for fun, curiosity, and conversation.
About 60 days ago, I started tracking detailed social media stats for all the profiles in our skater database. Of course, it's no surprise when you just list skaters by followers. Tony Hawk, Rob Dyrdek, Ryan Sheckler, etc are on top. These below, however, are the up and comers. The ones adding the most growth over the last couple months.
Below are the top gainers over the last 60 days sorted by percentage gain. Only profiles that have gained at least 300 followers are included in the report. If you think you should be in this list, search for your profile, click "Update," and add your Instagram to your profile. Maybe you'll be in the running next month in the Instagram Skateboarding World Championships.
Before we look at the list, some things to note:- Skater profiles get into our database from skateboarding events. Both ones we log and ones run by everyone in the industry using our scoring app, The Boardr Live™, including us.
- In the number one spot, we've got this kid, Zack Beilfuss with an unexplainable spike in followers in early June. Coincidentally, his brother Drew has the same spike. Hmm, what's going on there?
- The kid in the number two spot is climbing the charts with weed.
- Where has Austen Seaholm been? Steady racking up the Insta followers with a 79% growth over the last two months and landing in 4th place here.
- Aori Nishimura in 5th has 65% growth from placing well in the X Games Women's contest.
- In 6th is Ivan Federico who has been tagged by the whole industry lately after winning VPSPS at Vancouver.
- 7th place Jonas Carlsson recently won the European Series London Am Contest.
- 9th place Kisa Nakamura got a big boost after winning X Games Women's Park.
- The rest of the list is interesting to see how many of skateboardings most newly covered skaters are in there like Jamie Foy and Zion Wright, who have been on a rampage lately. Even industry vets making the jump to the boob tube like Mike Sinclair show high in the rankings from their recent media attention.
- Have a look at the top 100 below. For more numbers nerdness on a regular basis in your inbox, join The Boardr Mailing List and I'll hit you personally with stacks of skateboard digits.
