Lakeland Skatepark Innoskate 2014 Planning

Published 11/2/2013 by Rob Meronek

The Boardr crew was recently in Lakeland for a meeting with city officials and representatives from the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. to discuss an event involving the Lakeland Skatepark and the Polk Museum of Art. Innoskate 2013 was an event at the Smithsonian that brought a lot of attention to skateboarding, its influence on culture, and its amazing evolution over the last several decades. The event we're working on in Lakeland will highlight and celebrate a lot of the same things. While we met at the Lakeland Skatepark early that morning, I shot a few photos of everything there. Team Pain and the Lakeland locals that helped design it did a great job with this Park. What's wrong with Tampa and why don't we have something like this already? It's because something got old and forgotten about, then suddenly ended up being a roadblock to progression. I hope our city can work through that mess and get us out of 1970's skateboarding soon.

After skating all these years, I still can't believe what skateboarding has turned into. We've always known it influences music, culture, style, and everything in our lives, but it's sure nice to see intelligent people in society like this recognize that and try to do something about it by educating the public.

Thanks Lakeland, we'll be back and we'll keep you posted as plans for a new Innoskate come together for 2014 in Lakeland. Check out the video from the Smithsonian Innoskate for a sample of how Innoskate went down there last year.

It's your classic news coverage of skateboarding where it's always funny to see someone outside our tight circle of skateboard culture trying to figure it out. It's super good to see how Innoskate is getting more and more people interested in not just skateboarding itself, but how it works, how it has evolved, its history, and more. Check out a segment from when Ryan was on the news yesterday discussing it.

It was a beautiful day to be both a skate rat and skate nerd today in the City of Lakeland for Go Skateboarding Day. The Smithsonian, Polk Museum of Art, and IASC teamed up for the Innoskate program and taught us all new things, regardless of your new or seasoned veteran status as a lifelong skateboarder. I've got my story in photos below as usual along with HiDefJoe's edit of a new episode of On The Boardr.

This one hit fairly close to home for me. I've been both a computer and skateboard nerd my whole life. Recently, Rodney Mullen has immersed himself in the world of Linux, a computer operating system made by this dude Linus who I would imagine now can kickflip like everyone else. Anyway, Rodney was recently written about in this Wired article where he goes on about the similarities between banging your head on a computer keyboard like I do all day and perfecting skateboarding stunts.
