Friday, July 22, 2016

Some people pretend to be too cool for contests, but just about everyone skates the biggest contest ever: Instagram. How many likes? Views? Followers? Why is Skateboarding Contest Participation on the Decline?

Monday, June 13, 2016

Ever since I started working in the skateboarding industry, I've wondered if "real" skateboarding is growing or shrinking. The data out there isn't all that great, so all I've ever had to go on was my own when I formerly worked for Skatepark of Tampa prior to 2013. SPoT continues to do all the same things they've done, including their all ages contests. At The Boardr, we do similar ones on the Grind for Life Series, but they're spread all over Florida.

No Surprise: Skateboarding Climbing the Hip Hop Charts

Wednesday, May 7, 2014

I have 25+ years of rap lyrics memorized that you can get spilling from my lungs with just a small percentage of alcohol in my blood. It's been an interesting unfolding over those two plus decades watching that other thing I'm into mesh cultures with hip hop. Today I was cleaning up some of my digital memory banks and ran some key words through Rap Genius' Rap Stats tool. They catalog all these words in hip hop lyrics and created a tool that plots the useage of words in lyrics over the years. Are you surprised by the growth of skateboarding? I wonder if the sketchy skateboarding industry has seen the same growth in their numbers. In regular popsicle stick boards, my guess is no.

Skate by Numbers: Planning a Contest Format with an Element of Time

Friday, September 20, 2013

Let me warn you, this article and this new feature I'm starting called Skate by Numbers is nerdy, grow'd up, and bid'niss as hell. It has to do with all the things you probably hate in school if you're still stuck in that youth jail. Math, spreadsheets, numbers, addition, multiplication, logic, and all that.
